Sailing the Dalmatian Coast

The Croatian coastline is among the most beautiful in the world, where sapphire waters embrace sunlit islands and ancient harbours echo stories of emperors and seafarers. We embark on a journey by yacht along this magical Dalmatian shoreline. We sleep as the sea laps the hull and wake each morning to sail on to our next destination. Each stop offers a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and culture, making it a perfect summer Oak Hall expedition for adventure, relaxation, and a taste of the Mediterranean.

Makarska: a coastal paradise

Boarding our yacht, Labrador, we set sail along the shimmering Adriatic. Our first stop is Makarska, a picturesque town tucked between dramatic mountains and turquoise seas. Renowned for its pebble beaches and lush pine forests, Makarska invites us to explore its charming harbour or simply relax, with the majestic Biokovo range as a backdrop.

Mljet: the island of serenity

Sailing onward, we reach Mljet, an island oasis dominated by a serene national park. Here, saltwater lakes, lush forests, and the historic St. Mary’s Benedictine monastery offer space for reflection. Whether swimming, walking, or soaking in the stillness, Mljet is a remarkable haven natural beauty.

Dubrovnik: jewel of the Adriatic

Continuing south, our journey brings us to Dubrovnik, one of the most iconic cities on the Mediterranean. Known as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage site with its medieval walls, cobblestone streets, and stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. We can wander through the Old Town, visit the famous Rector’s Palace, or stroll along the ancient city walls for panoramic views.

Šipan and Trstenik: hidden Gems of the Elaphiti islands

Now we sail onward to the Elaphiti Islands, where Šipan and Trstenik offer a glimpse into another quieter, more traditional side of Croatia. Šipan, the largest of the Elaphiti Islands, is known for its lush greenery, tranquil beaches, and charming villages. Trstenik, located on the neighboring Pelješac Peninsula, is famous for its vineyards and olive groves - all surrounded by the stunning Mediterranean landscapes.

Korčula: birthplace of Marco Polo

Next, we visit Korčula, steeped in medieval charm and believed to be the birthplace of Marco Polo. Narrow streets, Venetian-era architecture, and landmarks like St. Mark’s Cathedral make this 'little Dubrovnik’ a delightful stop, blending history with island hospitality.

Hvar: island of sun and style

From Korčula, we head to glamorous Hvar - known for its sunny weather and elegant seaside promenade. Hvar is the exclusive ‘Montecarlo of the Adriatic’ but it’s not all about luxury—Hvar is also home to lush lavender fields, ancient olive groves, and stunning beaches. As we stroll through this charming town we can visit the 16th-century fortress for spectacular views toward our next, more peaceful penultimate harbour.

Bol: a tranquil pause

Bol on Brač Island, is home to Zlatni Rat, the iconic ‘Golden Horn’ beach. Framed by crystal-clear waters and pine forests, this serene haven is perfect for water sports or simply savouring the Adriatic breeze.

Split: a vibrant end to our journey

Our journey ends in Split, a vibrant UNESCO World Heritage site known for Diocletian’s Palace, a Roman masterpiece still central to the city’s life. Strolling its narrow streets, sipping coffee in bustling squares, and marvelling at Mediterranean architecture is a fitting end to our adventure.

Life onboard our yacht

Our home for the week is a large, traditional wooden yacht. The cabins are simple and compact in size but they are en-suite and have proper beds (some in bunk bed style).  It may be helpful to note that the steps on traditional yachts can be relatively steep.

Each morning we stop to swim in the sea, before sailing on to our next destination. We have lunch onboard, as well as our meeting, with a Bible talk and a time of singing. From mid-afternoon into the evening we explore a new place each day with optional activities (payable locally) such as cycling or a guided tour.

This sailing adventure offers the perfect combination of relaxation, adventure, and discovery, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Adriatic Sea.
