World-famous scenery

Imagine the sun glistening on the Aegean Sea as it sets behind a traditional Greek church, perched high on a cliff. Its whitewashed walls and blue domed roof are beautifully lit by this evening light. The island of Santorini is renowned world wide for its sunsets and photographic opportunities such as this.

Our three-star hotel lies at the edge of the village of Akrotiri at the south western end of the island. It is in a quiet location, away from the busier northern end of the island, but with good access to other parts of the island by bus. The hotel offers en-suite, air conditioned rooms and a swimming pool. We meet each evening to hear an interesting Bible talk.

Formed by a volcano

3500 years ago a large, round island in the middle of the Aegean sea was dramatically changed by a volcanic eruption. The centre of the island sank into the sea, and some scholars believe this gave rise to the famous legend of the lost city of Atlantis.

Modern day Santorini is a crescent shape, which represents the eastern side of the original island. It is approximately 11 miles in length and its volcanic history has created interesting black and red sand beaches.

The centre of the volcano and its hot springs still rise from the sea where the centre of the island once stood and we will have the opportunity to travel by boat to visit them.

Beautiful sunsets

Our optional excursion package takes us to explore Kamari and Oia, as well as a boat trip to the volcano and separate island of Thirasia.

On the day we visit Oia, we will have lunch rather than an evening meal, allowing us to join those watching the famous sunset as it creates an amazing array of colours on the buildings at the western end of the village. There will also be time to explore its attractive backstreets with artistic shops in the afternoon.

Cruising around the islands

We also take a boat ride to explore the islands that form the different parts of the original island. On the volcanic island at the centre we will be able to walk through lunar-like landscapes as our guide explains about the history of the island. The second stop offers the chance to swim in the sea, at a location where the water is warmed by the underground geothermal activity. We then continue to Thirasia, an appealing, peaceful island.

Seeing the island's highlights

Kamari is an attractive beach resort with black volcanic sand. The seafront is lined with tavernas and cafés, making it a relaxed location to spend the afternoon.

We also visit the medieval village of Pyrgos, a peaceful place with interesting backstreets to explore, and Profitis Ilias, the highest point on the island with excellent views in all directions.

"Have returned from this holiday incredibly refreshed and relaxed."

Stunning views

The main town of Fira, with its attractive cobbled streets, provides an interesting place to explore. It is perched on top of the cliff with amazing views across the sea to the other parts of the island.

Join us this summer to explore a beautiful Greek island!
